Hanthana Mountain Range is known as one of the famous hiking trails in Sri Lanka. It’s located in Kandy, a beautiful city of Hill Country. Hanthana is a mountain range with seven beautiful delightful peaks with a green land.
How to get there?
There are three ways to reach Hanthana from Kandy city. We followed the way from 4th Mile Post at Kandy-Uduwela (Hanthana road). Other than that you can reach there from Heerassagala near Amaya Hills hotel or through the University of Peradeniya. If you are lucky you can catch the bus to Uduwela from the Kandy bus stand by 7 am.
What to bring with you??
It is not a very hard hike, but make sure you are prepared well for the unpredictable changes in weather. Wear hiking shoes, have something to eat and water is a must. There are so many leaches around the trek, so be mindful for them. Better to wear leech socks or apply lime or soap to get rid of those creepy creatures. Having a raincoat would be very helpful if it starts raining while you are at the top.
Trekking up to the slopes of Hanthana Mountain Range
There are seven peaks of this misty mountain range. If you start early morning, there is a possibility to explore them all. Always be careful with the edges of the rocks on the trek. You may fell a hundred meters down if you miss a single step. Also, be mindful not be wiped away from the heavy winds from peaks.
Once you are on the top, you can have a picturesque view of the Kandy city. Usually, peaks are always get covered with mist by evening. So my advice is to try to start descending the hills by 3.00 p.m. If you follow safety guidelines, trying to keep a safe time frame, it is an unforgettable hike with a beautiful view.
So when you are at Kandy next time, make sure that you visit this beautiful mountain range for a day hike and have some good memories of being in heaven!
